ACADEMIC PROGRAMS - CAPACITY BUILDING

CCCI – Training Division comprises over 40 team members led by Dr Sandeep Bhalla under the supervision of Prof D Prabhakaran. The training division works extensively on capacity building of Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) in the field of chronic conditions and non-communicable diseases through various certificate courses which have received National and global recognitions. Under this division, CCCI has trained more than 15,000 doctors in the various courses given below:

Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (CCGDM) is a flagship joint certificate program designed, implemented and delivered by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) and National Health Mission (NHM), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of Gujarat. MOU was signed between National Health Mission, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat on October 2014. 

Objectives:

  • To develop core skills and need based competencies in Medical officers (Physicians, bstetricians and Gynaecologists) for the practice of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.
  • To establish their networks with existing specialized diabetes care centres and eminent Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for improving patient outcomes in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Execution:

The course has four modules spread across four months with once a month contact session, conducted on a designated Sunday to better suit the busy practice schedule of physicians. The sessions for each module generally lasts upto 3-4 hours. The first batch was started in August 2015 and finished in November 2015 followed by End line Evaluation. The second batch started in January 2016.

Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (CCGDM) is a flagship joint certificate program designed, implemented and delivered by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) and National Health Mission (NHM), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of Madhya Pradesh. MOU was signed between National Health Mission, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Madhya Pradesh on September 2015. This course will train 50 doctors in the two batches. First batch will start from January 2016 till April 2016, second batch 25 doctors will start from June 2016- Sept 2016.

Advanced Certificate Course in Prevention and Management of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease (ACMDC) Cycle-I is a joint certificate program designed and delivered by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC), World Heart Federation (WHF) and Chellaram Diabetes Institute (CDI). The educational grant for the same has been provided by Abbott Healthcare Private Limited.

Objectives:

    Primary Objective:
  • To enhance knowledge, skills and core competencies of Primary Care Physicians to prevent and manage Coronary Heart Disease manifestations of Diabetes
    Secondary Objective:
  • To develop a standard teaching protocol and module for evidence based learning
  • To build a network of Primary Care Physicians and specialists
  • Update primary care physicians with the latest Advancements

Execution:

ACMDC Cycle-I is an on-job training program with six study modules spanning over six consecutive months from September 2014 to February 2015, with once a month contact session. These sessions are conducted on a designated weekend at 35 Regional Centers (covering 15 states, 1 Union Territory and 32 cities) across India.

Impact:

1600 PCPs have been trained during the program

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) agreed to execute the MoU along with PHFI and Kolkata Diabetes & Endocrinology Forum (KDEF) with reference to the implementation of the Certificate Course in Evidence Based Diabetes Management (2013-2014) among 20 nominated physicians employed with KMC, Government of West Bengal. The course commenced on 20th April 2014 and will conclude in March 2015. The eligible participants have received IDF recognized certificates duly signed by KMC/ KDEF/ PHFI/DMDEA

Objectives:

1. To develop core skills and competencies of primary care physicians for the practice of evidence based diabetes management.

2. To establish network between primary care physicians and existing specialized diabetes care centers in India for improving patient outcomes in Diabetes care.

Execution:

The course is spread across a year with 12 training modules, the training sessions for which are held once a month, only on a Sunday to suit the schedule of busy physicians. The teaching method is a two-way, similar to a class room setting with presentation accompanied by discussion and discourses! The sessions for each module generally last up to 4-6 hours.

Impact:

20 government Medical Officers have been trained during the program

CCEBDM is an IDF recognized course and is a joint certification by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA), Chennai, recognized by International Diabetes Federation as an IDF Center of Education for 2013-2015 and is one of only eight centers recognized by IDF worldwide. The alarmingly increasing prevalence of diabetes among the population of Kerala prompted Government of Kerala to train and upgrade the skills of their medical officers under NRHM in the advanced and evidence based diabetes management for better patient outcomes. NRHM – Kerala Government adopted diabetes training initiative by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the three partners entered into MoU on 11th Jul, 2013 to implement the CCEBDM training program in Kerala to train 125 medical officers nominated by NRHM. There were 5 teaching centers across the state consisting of 2 regional faculty per center. Minimum batch size was 25 participants per center.

Objectives:

2. To establish network between primary care physicians and existing specialized diabetes care centers in India for improving patient outcomes in Diabetes care.
