Position Title : Research Assistant

Location : Bengaluru, Karnataka

Duration of Position : One year or co-terminus with the project, whichever is earlier.

Brief on the Organization:

The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is working towards building a healthier India. It is helping to address the limited institutional and systems capacity in India by strengthening education and training, advancing research and technology and facilitating policy and practice in the area of Public Health. PHFI is headquartered in New Delhi with national presence through its constituent units of regional Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) and Centers of Applied Research in core public health themes. The Foundation, established in 2006 as a public private initiative, is governed by an independent board comprising of senior government officials, eminent Indian and International academic and leaders, civil society representatives and corporate leaders. Project Brief:

The proposed study is a Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance funded cohort study on the effect of prenatal exposure to maternal cortisol and psychological distress on child development in Bengaluru, southern India. The study involves recruitment of pregnant women availing of antenatal services at public sector hospitals in Bengaluru; assessment of their mental health, estimation of maternal cortisol level and follow up until delivery and assessment of her child’s motor and mental development until the age of three years.


  • Data collection at the study hospitals and during home visits as a part of follow up.
  • Data management and data cleaning.
  • Writing of project reports annually and quarterly.
  • External Liasion:
  • Staff of the public sector study hospitals,
  • Designated lab for collection and transport of study samples
  • Biorepository for storage of study samples
  • Liaison with PI and other team members for smooth functioning of the project.
  • Visit to study hospital: Atleast thrice per week for overseeing of data collection.
  • Home visit for follow up: Atleast once per week.
  • Prepare reports for the PI and funding agency.
  • Write up research work for publication or other means of dissemination.
  • Summarize project result
  • Prepare articles, reports, and presentations.


  • Bachelor degree in Nursing/Psychology/Allied health sciences.


  • Masters in public health/MSW/MA in psychology.


  • Research experience in the area of public health.
  • Must be highly organized with strong analytical, research and statistical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, as is the ability to interact with healthcare professionals, researchers, grant agencies and trial participants.
  • Ability to summarize detailed information in an organized and concise manner for non-statisticians.


  • Knowledge of ‘Kannada’ language
  • Immediate availability

Annual Salary (CTC) will be based on the available skills and fitment of the incumbent as per the selection process.
