Associate Professor

M.Sc., Ph.D. (Karolinska Institute, Sweden)

Bharati Sharma is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar. She has a master’s degree in Child Development from the Maharajah Sayajirao University, Vadodara, and a PhD in medical science from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Her doctoral project was related to “Midwives as a human resource for maternal health” http://publications.ki.se/xmlui/handle/10616/42083

Before joining IIPH Gandhinagar, she has worked with Aga Khan Health Services, World Health Organization India, and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. She has also worked with Centre for Health Education, Training and Nutrition Awareness (CHETNA), and other voluntary organizations.

Her academic interests are in reproductive and child health, especially of the vulnerable populations residing in remote rural areas. Her focus within reproductive and child health is on childbirth reforms, in terms of improving and humanizing the quality of childbirth services in public hospitals. Her current work looks at the crucial role of nurse-midwives (staff nurses) in childbirth services and childbirth reforms. She is a consultant for quality of midwifery services with WHO, Geneva.

She is also interested in health policy processes, health management, health communication, professionalization and medical professions and human resources for health. She has published her work in international journals, written several chapters in books and presented her work in international conferences.
