PUBLIC HEALTH FOUNDATION OF INDIA
Announces the Third Round (2008) of its
FUTURE FACULTY PROGRAMME
The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is a unique initiative towards building public health capacity in India. It is a public private partnership, with initial funding from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and notable Indian philanthropists. It was launched by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on March 28, 2006 at New Delhi.
PHFI is an autonomous body governed by an eminent and actively engaged governing board consisting of eminent Indian and International academic and scientific thinkers, government representatives, civil society representatives and industrial leaders including Mr. Rajat K. Gupta (Chairman, Global Fund for Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis, Senior Partner, McKinsey & Company and Chairman, PHFI), Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia (Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India), Dr. Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate), Dr. Timothy Evans (Assistant Director General, World Health Organization) and Mr. Naresh Dayal (Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India).
PHFI is working towards building public health capacity by establishing 8 new institutes of public health delivering teaching, training and research programs, assisting the growth of existing institutions, fostering the growth of a strong national research and advocacy platform, and facilitating the accreditation of public health education in India. The first three institutes are expected to be operational beginning July 2008, in Delhi, Gandhinagar and Hyderabad.
Anticipating the need for adequately trained faculty for these institutes, PHFI launched the Future Faculty Programme (FFP) in 2006, for candidates keen on developing an academic career in public health. In the last two years, over 40 selected candidates were given fellowships for Masters level courses in Public Health at 30 eminent schools of public health in the USA, the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. These candidates are committed to return to PHFI and work with our institutes. Please find a detailed list of our partner schools, for your reference, as [Appendix - I].
Future Faculty Programme, 2008
Given the expanding horizon of PHFI’s activities, we are happy to announce that we are also expanding the mandate of the FFP. Beginning 2008 – 09, we are inviting applications for –

- Doctor of Philosophy fellowships, (3 – 5 years)

Recognizing the significant commitment and investment made by PHFI towards the career development of fellows of this program, it is expected that the candidates will return to work with PHFI or its institutes for a period spanning at least five years following the completion of their course work.
In view of these commitments, the fellowship program has been designed such that it requires candidates to raise personal resources to cover a part of the costs. PHFI will enter a legal agreement with the selected candidates to reimburse this cost, upon completion of their commitment with PHFI. Further details regarding this are appended in
