Communication that is engaging and empowering, and provides individuals and populations with evidence-based options for positive action is critical to enhancing health literacy in society, thereby enabling its movement towards better public health outcomes.

Public health advocacy action platforms are an equally critical requirement. The Health Communication and Advocacy Division (HCA Division) at the Public Health Foundation of India is involved in public health education, programmes and initiatives, training and research in consonance with National and State Health programmes and community needs. The longer-term mission of the HCA Division is to catalyse direct outreach by developing and delivering health communication programmes including the dissemination of information, and raise the technical educational content and profile of communication and advocacy within the broader realm of public health. Communities are central to the work at the Division, as aligned to the belief that the most effective solutions to address the public health burden lie within community-led action and ownership, while sustained by health systems reform that can address issues of equitable availability of and access to relevant services and support.
