Dr Gulrez Shah Azhar has joined the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar as a Senior Lecturer recently. He is the winner of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship of the European Commission. He completed his Europubhealth – European Masters in Public Health course from the universities of Sheffield, UK; Copenhagen, Denmark and the French School of Public Health, École des hautesétudes en santé publique (EHESP) in Rennes, France. His specialisations were in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Health Policy and Health Economics.

Before returning to India andjoining PHFI he was with the Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Clusterin the World health Organisation headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked there on an on-going systematic review of self-management of NCDs, gathering evidence on essential interventions for NCDs at primary care level in developing countries and on developing a prioritised research agenda for NCD research in low and middle income countries. His previous qualifications were MBBS and MD in Community Medicine from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of the Aligarh Muslim University. Some of his publications have appeared in national and international journals.

His previous research work has been on the pattern of utilisation of healthcare services during illness and doing a systematic review of DOTS based treatment of Tuberculosis in India using relapse as the main outcome measure. His has presented in various conferences and done short courses and trainings in related subjects.
